PACIFIC WILDLIFE RESEARCH CENTRE Delta, BC

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) approached Iredale Architecture – a preferred vendor for Government of Canada Public Works Projects – to design a multi-purpose building at their Westham Island research centre site in Delta, BC. Since the building is for both public and private use, the design is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The form and materiality reference the heritage building on the site using a hipped roof and cement board siding that emulates the cedar siding on the original building. The simple form and composition provide a modern take on the heritage references. To meet ECCC and PWGSC sustainability requirements, numerous cost-effective green design solutions were incorporated into the design. The building is constructed of durable, easy to clean, and easy to maintain materials such as concrete block, exposed concrete floors, metal roofing and cement board siding.
