WARFIELD CENTRAL FACILITY EXPANSION & RENOVATION

 

The key issue at this facility was that there was an absolute completion deadline, which required construction during the cold winter months of the BC interior. To meet the Client’s schedule requirements, the addition was built during October-December, which had unusually heavy snowfall.

 

Another important issue was that aesthetically, the addition was required to integrate with the existing building, which was uninsulated concrete. At the same time, the BC Energy Code requirements also needed to be met. Our solution was to use concrete on the outside, but to add insulation and a secondary interior wall.

 

The two buildings look of a piece from the exterior, but seismically, they operate as two separate buildings. We separated them by using a 2-inch seismic control joint.

 

After analyzing delivery, sequencing and exterior storage needs, we designed and implemented an improved layout for the yard facilities – to accommodate both the existing and new structures.
